I'm on a Marsha Canham kick - re-reading books I purchased a couple of years ago as well as adding to my collection. This book is a re-write - it was formerly published under the name, "My Forever Love." Please see Ms. Canham's note at the bottom of this review.

The setting of this story takes place during the crusade period when Richard the Lionheart and the Templar Knights fought in the land we now know as the Middle East - with the Crusade States being known as Outremer. Although Richard is mentioned in this book, he's a minor character.

Rather, the story focuses on Ciaran Tamberlane, a member of the Order of the Knights Templar. Tamberlane was a warrior monk who had taken a vow of celibacy, he was mighty in strength and a valiant knight. After years of killing and weary with the pillaging and horror he had seen and participated in, one day, Tamberlane just walks away from the battle after rescuing a wounded Muslim woman and her child from his fellow compatriots.

Eventually, he arrives back in England, however, there is a shadow over his head because of the circumstances in which he departed the Crusades. Tamberlane is content to live in a Robin Hood type forest in a secluded castle with a gathering of misfits until one day, a young woman - Amaranth - on the run from her cruel beast of a husband, comes into his life. She is seriously wounded, so Tamerlane takes her to his castle where his people see to her wounds, giving her a safe harbor to recuperate.

The above is the foundation for the rest of the story. Obviously Tamerlane and Amaranth (Amie) are destined for one another but first, her husband and his band of knights must be dealt with - the sooner the better - they are definitely thugs without honor. There are some great minor characters within this story. I loved the albino Marak - a Muslim who was an expert in holistic medicinal treatment.

Please see the note below from Marsha Canham, Author of "The Dragon Tree."

"Formerly released in print as My Forever Love, The Dragon Tree has undergone a complete rewrite, going far beyond the gentle revisions some of my backlist books have had before being reissued in ebook form. I was never happy with the title, My Forever Love. I was never really thrilled with the cover. And I was nearing the breaking point of the final straw when nothing in the publishing world made sense to me anymore and the stress was showing in my writing. I had always said I would stop writing when it ceased to be fun, and ceased to be an outlet for my vivid imagination. Halfway through the writing of The Dragon Tree (and that was the original working title before some young newbie editor decided it wasn't romantic enough and changed it) I lost steam. I knew I would be retiring when I finished it and frankly, my heart just wasn't in it anymore. Bad thing to confess, I know, but the honest truth.

With this rewrite and reissue, my muse is happy with it. I hope I have taken some of the wooden-ness (is that a word? if not, it should be) out of the characters and given them more heart. They deserved better treatment than what they got the first time around *s*."

The Dragon Tree edition by Marsha Canham Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Tamberlane is a Templar Knight fighting in the Crusades to reclaim the Holy Lands for the British Crown when, sickened by the wholesale slaughter committed in the name of God, he quits and walks away. Instead of being recognized for his compassion, he is generally deemed a coward and traitor -- even by his own mother and father. He lives as lord of an isolated, neglected castle owned by his uncle.

Some three years into his exile, he is hunting with his squire and knights when he discovers that one of the villages on his lands has been attacked and the entire population massacred. The only survivor is a young woman on the verge of dying. Tamberlane carries her back to the castle and places her in the care of Marak, an albino Saracen healer who he rescued in the Holy Lands. Unbeknowst to them, Amaranth (the heroine) is the escaped wife of a sadistic knight who takes great pleasure in abusing her. Against great odds, she survives, but she knows her husband will not stop searching until he can find and subject her to a excruciating death.

So begins a tale that has intriguing characters, a fascinating storyline, and a pace that never falters. Both hero and heroine are brave, intelligent and compassionate, and Canham is adept at building character through details of living, like Tamberlane's relationship with his hounds, Maud and Hugo. The idiosyncratic healer is also a very likeable character with a clever sense of humor. Conversely, the villain is one we love to hate. There is so much to like about this novel, but I won't say any more except that readers are in for a treat!
Marsha Canham is one of my favorite authors and every time I read one of her novels I think to myself "Now THAT is her best one ever." Each and every one is that wonderful. This one, however, really may BE her best. Without a doubt, I will carry this book in my heart forever. Truly THE DRAGON TREE is so beautiful, so poignant, so moving that it stands head and shoulders above the standard historical romance fare..

A Crusader fighting at the right hand of King Richard, Ciaran Tamberlane, is a powerful and fearsome knight known as The Dragonslayer. The beginning of the book finds the noble warrior monk in the midst of a fierce battle between his brothers of the Knights Templar and the Saracens. Senseless slaughter has become unbearable for Tamberlane, and when he sees two knights thundering down upon an injured woman clutching a small child in her arms, he can no longer turn away. The cost of his actions was disgrace, full excommunication, and expulsion from the Order. His family turned from him and only the intervention of the King save him from execution for treason. Content to live out the rest of his penitent years at a secluded castle far away from the battle fields and court intrigue, he is a man full of sorrow and loneliness.

While on a hunting trip, he stumbles across a horrific raid on a small village on his demesne. He arrives just in time to see a mercenary knight preparing to viciously impale a beautiful woman who was already near death from tortuous injuries. In a rage over the unprovoked attack, the Dragonslayer kills the villain and carries the woman back to the safety of his castle.

Awaking full of pain and fear at the unfamiliar surroundings, Amarantha fears that she has escaped one cruel man only to be caught by another. She knows that the villagers were all killed for hiding her and the guilt and grief is almost too much to bear. Fleeing a sadistic husband that she nearly killed the night of the escape, she hoped to find sanctuary at a convent. Should she trust the Dragonslayer? Can he truly help her escape her husband? Amarantha knows her vengeful husband will stop at nothing and kill all who try to hide her. Could it be true that the brave knight who rescued her could indeed slay dragons?

When a plot by Prince John to kill King Richard as he makes his return to England is uncovered, Tamberlane and Amarantha are forced to decide between escaping the hunt and saving England's king. Unfolding in heart-stopping fashion, the story keeps you mesmerized from the first words of the prologue until the very end.

If it were possible to give more than 5 stars to a book, I would. It's so wonderful that I just may go right back and read it again.
