Spoiler Alert. Not that it will matter. True fans know Neels' stories and read and reread them anyway. But if you want to be 'surprised,' don't read this. Get the book and read it.

The TV show Bonanza filched it's plots from Shakespeare. That worthy, whoever he was, furnished enough solid material for years of great episodes. Betty Neels filched her plots from fairy tales. She uses Cinderella a lot, yet it's never hackneyed or boring. She produced enough durable stories to make herself and her heirs wealthy, even though she was not extravagantly paid.

The heroine is not a Cinderella. She has no family to speak of, only a stingy selfish barrister brother and a nonchalant suitor he assumes she will marry. She meets the usual handsome doctor, who has plenty of family. But he has an uneasy understanding with a manipulating, evil princess sort, who first latched onto him thinking she could make him over to be her suitable mate. But she falls for her suitable mate and still manages to cling to the doc. She doesn't want him but she doesn't want the heroine to have him either.

Her plan might have worked had she not been caught out with her true love several times. The good doctor extricate himself from his ill fated engagement that never was, and snags his true love just as she's about to leave the country.

The heroine of this tale should have known almost immediately what was up, but she didn't. Think the story improves after the first chapter or so.
This is the third time I've read her books. Her stories may keep to the same formula but her books are good clean reading. Her characters are always interesting and they're like a travel log. Would like to go to England and try to find her small villages.
If you enjoy Betty Neels, this loving, gentle story will become a favorite. Snow, good food, mostly nice relatable people, medical crises, and some travel. A good read.
So much like home, I was born and raised in that village. Nice to see it in a book. Lovely story too!
Way back in the 70s a Betty Neels was a relaxing mellow read in the midst of all the bodice rippers and alpha males. I find the same can be said today. She also dreamt up some nasty families to overcome.
I have been buying Betty Neels books for my mother (in her 70's) at her request, as an introduction to using a . I can say without hesitation that she loves all of these books. As she has said, "The plots may all be somewhat similar and the stories quaint, but I enjoy them immensely and find them endearing." What better recommendation could there be? She now has almost every Betty Neels book available for the . (And the Paperwhite? She loves the backlight and the ability to make the font larger.)
While any Betty Neels story is somewhat predictable, every one has well developed characters, with insights into their emotions and motives. This one has all the usual a tall, handsome, older physician who always knows best; the main female whose family is either in financial straits, is emotionally dysfunctional, or is absent altogether; and travel around England or the continent (almost always including The Netherlands); a large cast of supporting characters; and, of course, some very elegant meals. No sexual innuendo, no violence, just people helping others and developing relationships along the way. A book by Betty Neels is an excellent way to relax and escape for a few short hours.
